Daily News: Friday

Album Sales Keep Dropping: “US-based album sales continued their plunge last week, part of an increasingly aggressive slide. Total sales edged towards 8 million for the period, a figure that falls 24.5 percent below same-week figures last year, according to Nielsen Soundscan. During the most recent quarter, album sales dropped 10.7 percent below comparable, year-ago totals, a rather disastrous ending.” (DMN)

Imeem Grabs Lavigne Exclusive: “On Thursday, Imeem pointed to a video exclusive from Avril Lavigne, one that follows premieres from both the Rolling Stones and Ray J. The video, “The Best Damn Thing,” was showcased on avrillavigne.imeem.com, complete with embed codes for viral distribution. The entire album, which carries the same title, is also available for full-length, on-demand streaming on the Lavigne Imeem profile page.” (DMN)

European Parliament Rejects Plans To Cut File-Sharers: “The European Parliament has narrowly voted against a rule which would cut the Internet connections of people who illegally download copyright infringing music and other digital files. The parliament gathered yesterday to vote on the “Report on the Cultural Industries,” French member of European parliament Guy Bono’s study on the economic and social importance of the cultural sector in the EU.” (Billboard)

Live Nation Empire-Building Continues: “Live Nation has now grabbed a major stake in T In The Park, a massive Scottish music festival. The deal, a joint venture with Gaiety Investments, grants Live Nation a two-thirds chunk of Dance Factory, which controls T In The Park and other festivals. “We look forward to continuing to work with an array of diverse artists and creating first class events such as T In The Park and Hydro Connect,” said Geoff Ellis, head of DF Concerts.” (DMN)
