Smashing Pumpkins Sue Virgin Records: “The Smashing Pumpkins are suing Virgin Records, saying the record label has illegally used their name and music in promotional deals that hurt the band’s credibility with fans.” (via AP)
Sony BMG Planning Subscription Service: “The CEO of Sony BMG Music Entertainment says that the company is developing an online music subscription service that would give users unlimited access to its music and be compatible with a host of digital music players… Schmidt-Holtz did not offer a timeline for unveiling the service.” (via Silicon Alley Insider)
Howard Rises At EMI Publishing: “EMI Music Publishing U.K. has promoted A&R manager Felix Howard to VP A&R. Howard has a strong songwriting history of his own, having penned works for such artists as Kylie Minogue, Sugababes and Amy Winehouse, and signing as a writer with the music publisher eight years ago.” (via Billboard)
Justice Department Approves XM, Sirius Merger: “The US Department of Justice has now approved a merger between Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio, according to an announcement issued Monday afternoon. The tie-up, actually a buyout by Sirius, has been awaiting approval for more than one year. The green light now shifts the attention towards the Federal Communications Commission, which must also approve the deal.” (via DMN)
